In the past couple of weeks, I have immersed myself into the world that seemingly everyone else is a part of. I am finally the owner of one of those iPhone doo-dads. It’s been an eye-opening experience to see how convenient it is to waste my time. Take this article for example: I started the blank page 2 hours ago and squandered every precious minute on keeping up with my Words With Friends games, checking the weather, looking up movies starring Jack Nance, peeping baseball standings, calling my mom and playing Tiny Wings in hopes that I can reach that stupid cloud over 10 times in one round. In other words, this device of infinite uses has reformed me into the braindead slacker that I have always strived to be. But with all of the things that the iPhone can do to erase the hours of your day, there’s still one app that doesn’t exist. It’s one that would finally stave off my meandering curiosities and actually allow me to live life to its fullest potential. It’s an app that trumps all of the other apps that have ever existed and shoves a dirty rag down its throat. It’s the [...]

Ahhh, the Subway Station. The last frontier of American Advertising. Every day, millions of commuters walk by them, stand by them, but their focus is not on them. Of course, we’re just waiting for our train to come and looking at anything besides the end of the tunnel would be sheer blasphemy. But every once in a while, attention must be paid to these artifacts of culture, as they are capable of inducing laughter, anger and total mindfuckery. Once again, here’s a rundown of some of the worst that I saw in the last month: I don’t even know who to blame for this one. Is it an ad for Samsung, AT&T or Best Buy? Or is it an evil alliance of all 3? Is it true that I can’t write notes on a phone unless I buy a Samsung at a Best Buy with AT&T service? Would it still work for 2 out of 3? The point is that there is no point to writing over a picture. This isn’t 2002. We have the technology to take a picture and then add a caption on the bottom so that the world can know that “we” are “on our way [...]

Phantom Songs is an ongoing series of musical pieces that you can’t quite put your finger on. You have most definitely heard the song before, but are most likely not able to pinpoint who made it, when it was released, and/or what the song is really about. All of the artist’s history and biography was either stolen from wikipedia or made up entirely. The pop charts of the ’90s were chock-full of manufactured feel-goodery. If a popular song wasn’t about commanding the listeners to do vague things, it was composed to vaguely gush about the values of life. Tom Cochrane’s 1991 hit, “Life is a Highway” seems to fall into that category. I remember hearing it incessantly on the radio, as my mom drove down a beaten road surrounded by fields. It didn’t make me nostalgic about the beauty of life, but moreso caused me to feel anxious and desperate to reach the end of the infinite gravel. To this day, every time I hear that annoying harmonica solo, I feel a sense of dread that it’s going to be a long time before I get anywhere. Songs like these still found a home years after they were forgotten. They’re [...]

New York has to be one of the most ad-happy cities in the world. We’ll put an ad on everything except the homeless [but don't be surprised if Disney dips their fingers in some homeless money]. We put ads on top of ads and when that ad is no longer relevant, we slap another one on. This whole city is fascinated with letting other people know that shit exists. Then, there are the ads that you see on a daily basis. You know, the ones that hang under the fluorescent lights while you wait for the train. You know that you read every single one of them. Considering that they change so frequently, I’ve decided to start this new series, showcasing the worst ads that CBS Outdoors had to offer for the month. A short note before I start: I have already received feedback that this article should be more focused on in-train advertisements. I have chosen against this because not only is it difficult to get a clean shot of them, but they also stick around for ages. Focusing on the station ads allows me to write on a more consistent basis. However, I will sprinkle in some inside-ads [...]

You have most definitely heard the song before, but are most likely not able to pinpoint who made it, when it was released, and/or what the song is really about. All of the artist’s history and biography was either stolen from wikipedia or made up entirely. The art of writing a personal ad is one that has always been lost. It’s a medium that doesn’t require linguistic integrity or grammatical correctness. It is essentially a forum for people to express how badly they want to get laid. Their words may feel like poetry to themselves, but on paper, they all apear to be sloppy, desperate accounts of aching hearts, lonely souls and masochistic inquiries. You may not know this [or maybe you do], but I am a purveyor of personal ads. I find the act of writing a bunch of nonsense to be a therapeutic exercise. In fact, I just wrote one yesterday. Typically, my ads are sandwiched in between “I wwant to hump yr boans” and “you looked hawt on the L trang, do you like my beard?”.
I’m taking another stab at this. Something inside me says that this is going to ultimately become my off-season replacement of the NFL Roundup. In reality, it already has. This is both a good and bad thing. On one hand, it showcases my ability to easily become a one-trick pony, limiting myself to only one format of writing. On the other hand, I should find solace in having a trick and something to write about once a week. I’m giving this one more shot, in hopes that it reaches a wider audience than the Roundup. In a perfect world, this could easily happen. As only a select few of my friends and acquaintances understand/enjoy/want to read about football, a hell of a lot more ride the trains and feel its wrath on the weekends. At least this time, I whipped up this sweet pornographic to put at the top of the article. At least there’s that. Uptown 1 and 2 Trains run express from Chambers St to 14th St I have to admit, the 1 train is pretty worthless to me. The only time I ever take it is when I make the rare excursion to Van Cortlandt Park. When [...]

I was reading the cover of AM New York the other day, because that’s what happens when I have 10 seconds to kill and words are in front of my face. I would just give you the link right here, but AM New York’s website is the suck and I don’t promote the suck. Just take my word for it. It displayed an overcrowded L train [or an undercrowded 5 train] and claimed that 61% of straphangers feel that service has gotten worse in the past 2 years. Let’s ignore the fact that only 700 people [or 3 train cars] were surveyed and take their argument at face value. The MTA has done very little to try to “improve” anything. In the past year, they have changed the robot voice from saying “Please be patient” to “Thank you for your patience”. This week, they also unveiled a new map to display the routes after hours [also famously known as "Dude, Where's My B Train?"]. You see, these are very minuscule improvements, but they are still improvements. I don’t know what exactly the 427 people were expecting, but making a transit system perfect is an almost impossible process. We’re talking about [...]

All of the artist’s history and biography was either stolen from wikipedia or made up entirely. You could see the ’90s coming from a mile away. It was a multi-colored cumulus cloud in the distance, slowly raining upon America. Our immense fear of communism finally subsided, leaving us with a void in need of filling. Everything was changing: clothing was getting looser, TV was getting more raunchy and Rodney Dangerfield was deemed no longer funny. It was also around this time that we started accepting whatever garbage the Europeans wanted to send our way. Suddenly, music took on a whole new meaning. Instead of suggesting that things be done, now as music listeners, things were demanded of us. Enter Technotronic, a Belgian musical project [not a group, but a project. We aint talking bout no group. Not a group. We talking 'bout project] curated by Jo Bogaert. Although his personal history is vague, [...]

The best part of the season is officially over. I hope that you enjoyed it and acknowledged it as such. From here on out, it’s going to be nothing but bullshit. We’ll see players slandering their opponents as “the ones who suck dick”, sports analysts will spend the next two weeks sucking whatever blue dick comes into their path and Spike Lee will send a picture of his dick to [insert celebrity from Boston here]. Take a deep breath. Unless you want to get wrapped up in the hype [you don't], just consider the season over. Watch the Pro Bowl, if that’s your fancy and move on. This is kind of great if you think about it. We get a 3 week head start of continuing our normal existence. Unless…well…you follow other sports. In that case, we don’t have shit in common and I would love to direct you to the nearest hockey blog [It's over there. To your left]. There’s only one major problem. We all have friends. And those friends REALLY want to watch the Super Bowl. I’m sure it’s something that I’ve bitched and moaned about years prior. “ So two Sundays from now, you can see me sitting [...]

Dry your eyes, America. It’s not the end of the world. It’s just that the thing you expected to happen didn’t happen. You can’t blame the Packers and Saints for blowing it. You can only blame yourself for expecting it. Don’t get angry that Tim Tebow and TJ Yates didn’t pull through. You should be ashamed of yourself for having such bold predictions. A week full of upsets is a week that teaches us why they play the game. And if you didn’t hear about the games this week…well…I regret to inform you that the following things happened: San Francisco 49ers 36, New Orleans Saints 32 This is the game that we’re going to want 3 weeks from now, but surely won’t get. It’s that type of game that will be analyzed until the end of time. Years from now, or maybe even shorter than we expect, it will be playing on late-night NFL Network, with highlights narrated by the guy that does every NFL Films production [is that the same guy, or is it different people with a voice changer?] with his monotone voice that could put an elephant on PCP to sleep.
